Sheet cutting are processes that slice into flat stock material following a profile to produce a shape. These processes include Sheet Metal Cutting. High-powered CNC lasers or water jets are used to cut sheet stocks, including sheet metal.
The material's gauge determines the thickness of the part. From a one-off batch to mass production, custom designs can be cut in various materials ranging from plastics, elastomers, composites, metals, and more. Sheet cutting is also typical for blank preparation in other manufacturing processes like sheet metal fabrication or metal stamping.
Advanced Tech Machining's CNC Laser Cutting and Water Jet Cutting service can cut just about any material from clear acrylic panels to thick tool steel. We offer an immediate solution for any project with instant quoting and materials including:
Metals
Plastics
Sheet Metal Laser Cutting
Sheet metal laser cutting is a precise and efficient industrial process that uses a high-powered laser beam to cut intricate shapes, designs, or patterns from flat sheets of metal.
The laser beam melts, burns, or vaporizes the material, creating accurate cuts with minimal heat-affected zones.
It uses a high-power beam of light (laser) to cut out flat and thin sheets of metals. The process is directed by optics and computer numerical control (CNC) technology, which accounts for the high precision of laser cut parts.
Types of lasers used for sheet metal cutting include:
Fiber Lasers
CO2 Lasers
Crystal Lasers
Water Jet Cutting
A water jet cutter, also known as a water jet or waterjet, is an industrial tool capable of cutting a wide variety of materials using an extremely high-pressure jet of water, or a mixture of water and an abrasive substance.
Waterjet cutting is often used during the fabrication of machine parts. It is the preferred method when the materials being cut are sensitive to the high temperatures generated by other methods.
Waterjet can be divided into pure waterjet and abrasive waterjet.
Both methods have their own advantages and are chosen based on the material being cut and the desired outcome. The thickness of the path carved is called kerf and in Laser Cutting it is typically less than 0.010”. Unlike lasers, in Water Jet cutting because water cannot be compressed when a thin stream of water is shot out of a nozzle at very high pressure it can cut through just about anything.
Water Jet Cutting has an advantage over some thicker metals since it does not create excess heat which can affect temper. A Water Jet's kerf has a cut thickness of 0.040” to 0.050” but the general tolerance of both Water Jet Cutting and Laser Cutting are the same at +/- 0.010".
Soft materials like foams or gaskets are more suited for Water Jet Cutting since it does not compress or burn. Materials like PVC, PC, and even galvanized metals that should only be cut by Water Jet to avoid hazardous fumes such as fluorine, chlorine, or zinc when exposed to heat.
Laser Cutting has an advantage of speed and availability, since they can quickly handle most plastics and thinner metals deftly. Lasers are also used for engraving and part marking.
