Bolts, Screws, Nuts and Fasteners come in a wide range of different sizes and shapes but the main production process remains the same generally. Advanced Tech Machining is highly proficient in every step of bolt production and can custom-design implements according to customer specifications.
Manufacturing Bolts, Screws and Fasteners usually involves materials such as stainless steel, carbon steel, brass, aluminum, and plastics. Depending on the requirements, the manufacturing processes will vary.
Choosing Raw Material
This first step depends on the application and fastener requirements, a screw for a medical implant will have different material specifications from a fastener for engine parts, for example. The material required will be received, inspected, documented and ID-ed for the manufacturing process.
Creating Fasteners
CNC Machining is one of the ways used to produce fasteners. Raw material in bar form is programmed into a computerized machining center that will manufacture close tolerance small to medium volume screws, bolts, nuts, fasteners and custom machine parts. This automated process is very timely and efficient.
Heat Treatment
A standard process for all bolts, this entails exposing the implements to extreme temperatures to harden the steel. Threading is usually done before heat treatment as this will change the properties of the steel to make it harder.
Some customers require threading after heat treatment particularly for applications such as engine and cylinder head bolts, which is more expensive since the threading is applied to hardened steel, but the resulting threads will maintain their shape better.
Surface Finishing
Operations to alter the surface of the bolt or screw to enhance its function or its appearance. This can involve:
Knurling: using a lathe to create crossed, angled or straight lines into the metal.
Burnishing/Reaming: a tool passes along the body in sliding motion to enhance the look of the fastener's surface finish.
Grinding: this removes imperfections from the screw to make the surface flat, smooth or reflective.
Protective Coating
The final step where bolts and screws are given protective coating to prevent rust or corrosion.
After these steps, the custom machined fasteners will be tested and inspected, checked for their hardness levels, threading accuracy, impact and tensile strength, torque levels, coating thickness and mating fit.
