High-pressure streams of water strong enough to cut metal. That's water jet cutting, an industrial tool capable of cutting materials with either water or a mix of water and abrasive substances. At our Northern California machine shop, Advanced Tech Machining utilizes this method to create precision parts and components as well as for prototyping purposes.
How Water Jet Cutting Works
When utilizing only water, pure water jet cutting is intended for softer materials such as wood, plastics and rubber. But when the water stream incorporates an abrasive such as titanium, stainless steel, aluminum, glass, ceramic or concrete, the cutting capabilities are enhanced and the tool can cut through hard metals.
Like CNC, water jet cutting is a subtractive form of manufacturing. In abrasive water jet cutting systems, the abrasive material is introduced in the cutting head and mixes with the water stream. This makes the stream sharper and allows it to cut more effectively. This makes abrasive water jet cutters a thousand times more powerful than their pure water counterparts. The stream becomes larger in diameter and capable of going through materials that are ten inches thick, all without heat or mechanical stress.
Water Jet Cutting Applications
Water Jet Cutting for Aerospace Components
In this field, all components require complex and accurate precision with no margin of error This is why water jet cutting is so useful in the aerospace part production process. Abrasive water jet cutting is used for steel, brass, Inconel and aluminum components, such as wing sections, turbine blades, brake components and landing gears.
Water Jet Cutting in the Auto Industry
Similarly, these benefits make water jet cutting useful in the auto industry. Another plus is how the technology can be utilized by robotic systems. Pure water jet cutting is used for shaping interior carpets, insulation and head linings. Another advantage is that water jet cutting does not have heat affected zones (HAZ), nor does it create noxious fumes or cause stress on the material being cut. Water jet cutting produces smooth and burr-free surfaces, so there is no need for secondary finishing.
