CNC Milling and Turning utilize Computer Aided Design (CAD) where a 3D model is designed, serving as the basis of the CNC machine's instructions. Once the model data is inputted, the machine will start working on the block of material, whittling away until the final product emerges.
CNC Milling: an automated mill conducts multiple operations along 4 or 5 axis to cut the component - a cutting tool spins against the stationary workpiece.
CNC Turning: cutting tools focus on a single point and the workpiece is rotated at changing points so the tools cut against it and carve the programmed patterns.
CNC Milling processes involve the material being held in place while the cutting tools rotate around it while in CNC Turning the tools to maintain in the same place while the material is rotated at speed to create the exact shape. CNC Milling is better suited for machining flat and irregular surfaces, while CNC Turning is mainly used for working on cylindrical or conical surfaces.
Because these are computer controlled processes, CNC Milling and Turning can create a wide variety of designs, patterns and details that are near impossible to do manually.
