EDM stands for Electrical Discharge Machining, which is a form of precision machining that uses thermal energy instead of mechanical force during the process of subtractive manufacturing, when material is removed from a workpiece.
Electrical Discharge Machining 101
EDM, also known as Spark Machining, utilizes electrical sparks around 8000º C to 12000º C. This method is utilized by engineers when standard machining process such as CNC milling and CNC tuning can't produce the desired cut, like sharp internal corners or particularly deep cavities. This is done by using rapidly recurring current discharges between two electrodes which are separated by a dielectric liquid and subjected to an electric voltage.
Electrical discharge machining is mainly used for hard metals that are difficult to machine with traditional techniques. EDM can create intricate contours and cavities in pre-hardened steel as well as other metals and metal alloys such as titanium, Hastelloy, Kovar and Inconel.
EDM is most widely used in the mold-making, tool and die industries but is gaining ground in prototype manufacturing as well as in fabricating production parts particularly in the aerospace, automobile and electronics industries.
