Difference Between CNC Machining and 3D Printing

When it comes to prototyping components, currently the two go-to methods are CNC machining and 3D printing.

CNC machining utilizes a variety of cutters and spinning tools to shape the piece. Introduced by MIT in the 1950s, CNC stands for computer numerical control, this is a form of subtractive manufacturing, which means that it carves out needed components from larger blocks of material. So a piece of metal will get parts of it cut away until the finished part remains.


CNC machining utilizes a variety of cutters and spinning tools to shape the piece. The advantage of this process include dimensional accuracy, strength, and a wide variety of usable materials from wood to metals to plastics. This is why it is a staple for engines, airplane machinery and other fields that require robust parts. Woodworking, lettering and engraving also use CNC machining.


3D printing, on the other hand, is a form of additive manufacturing. Also invented at MIT, during the 1980s, this process entails building products from the bottom up. Materials such as plastic filaments, resins, plastics or metal powders are added layer by layer and then solidified with a source of energy such as lasers or heated extruders, so that the layers harden and form the finished product. 3D printing allows greater freedom of shape and has applications in many fields due to its accuracy, speed and low cost and weight. The medical field, food industry and artists have made great use of 3D printing.


These are the differences between CNC machining and 3D printing. They both have their strengths and weaknesses. In terms of mass production, economic constraints means that 3D printing has low volume of output whereas CNC machining has an advantage in terms of economies of scale when the quantities of products are higher.
