How CNC Milling and Turning Precision Machining Work
CNC machining is a form of subtractive manufacturing, which means that the process starts with a larger piece of stock material that the tools whittle down until they form the final product.
CNC milling and tuning utilize Computer Aided Design (CAD) where a 3D model is designed, serving as the basis of the CNC machine's instructions. Once the model data is inputted, the machine will start working on the block of material, whittling away until the final product emerges.
In CNC milling, an automated mill conducts multiple operations along 4 or 5 axis to cut the component - a cutting tool spins against the stationary workpiece. Whereas in CNC turning, cutting tools focus on a single point and the workpiece is rotated at changing points so the tools cut against it and carve the programmed patterns.
Because these are computer controlled processes, CNC milling and turning can create a wide variety of designs, patterns and details that are near impossible to do manually. They are also extremely accurate due to the precision machinery we utilize. CNC machines can operate for long periods and produce large quantities of products. They can also work on a variety of materials, including highly durable metals and alloys. This is why they are essential in manufacturing aerospace components.
